El 15 de gener de 1965 es va publicar el primer single de la banda britànica The Who acreditat amb el seu nou i definitiu nom, després de publicar el disc anterior com a The High Numbers. 'I can't explain' va ser composta -amb fortes influències dels Kinks- per Pete Townshend i va aconseguir accedir al top10 britànic a l'abril del mateix any. Als Estats Units, on es va publicar un mes abans, no va passar del lloc 99 del Hot100. La cara B contenia un tema de blues tradicional (que també van versionar els Kinks), ‘Bald headed woman’. En tots dos temes va participar Jimmy Page com a músic de sessió.
