El 16 de gener de 1957 es va inaugurar al nº 10 del carrer Matthew Street de Liverpool el Cavern Club, originalment un club de jazz que uns anys més tard es convertiria al centre de l'escena rock'n'roll de la ciutat portuària . El 9 de febrer de 1961 hi debutarien els Beatles els que arribarien a realitzar 292 actuacions fins al 1963. Pel Cavern van passar també grups com The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Elton John, Queen, The Who i John Lee Hooker entre molts altres. El club va tancar les portes el 1973 i onze anys després va ser reobert per un jugador del Liverpool F.C. al mateix lloc conservant el disseny i construcció originals.
