El 10 de febrer de 1967 es va publicar als Estats Units el single 'I Never Loved a Man' (The Way I Love You)' interpretat per Aretha Franklin, que va suposar el primer gran hit de la seva carrera i per a molts un tema fonamental de la història del soul. Va ser el seu single debut a Atlantic després de sis anys infructuosos per a Columbia Records en què va gravar nou àlbums sense èxit comercial. El seu productor Jerry Wexler sabia que tenia una joia a les mans i li va donar total llibertat quan van començar a gravar les sessions de l'àlbum als estudis FAME a Muscle Shoals. La primera cançó que va proposar Aretha va ser 'I never loved a man' (The way I love you'), escrita per Ronnie Shannon. Està inclosa a la llista exposada al Rock and Roll Hall of Fame de les cançons que van donar forma al rock & roll
