El 21 de febrer del 1968 es va publicar l'àlbum debut de la banda Blood Sweat & Tears formada per Al Kooper el 1968 amb la intenció de fusionar el blues-rock amb el jazz-soul afegint a la formació clàssica de guitarra. baix, bateria i teclats, una secció de vent (trompetes, trombó i saxo), preparant el camí per a grups com Chicago. Aclamat per la crítica, que ho segueix considerant la millor obra de Kooper, és un àlbum extraordinari que defineix a la perfecció el pop eclèctic americà que va sorgir als anys post-Sgt.Pepper. Tot i això va ser un fracàs comercial i no va produir hits, encara que 'I love you more than you'll ever know' i 'I can't quit her' van ser temes molt punxats a les FMs de rock progressiu. Al Kooper abandonaria el projecte, seguint la resta de la formació amb el mateix nom i un nou cantant amb qui aconseguirien cridar l'atenció internacional un any més tard.
