El 31 de març de 1976 es va publicar 'Presence', el setè àlbum d'estudi de Led Zeppelin, gravat en tres setmanes entre els mesos de novembre i desembre de 1975 a Musicland Studios de Munic, Alemanya, amb Plant recuperant-se en una cadira de rodes d'un greu accident d'automòbil sofert a Grècia que va motivar la suspensió d'una prevista gira mundial al punt cim de la seva carrera. Plant i Page havien planejat aquest àlbum com la tornada a la simplicitat i l'espontaneïtat després d'haver treballat amb complexos i sofisticats arranjaments a 'Houses of the Holy' o 'Physical Graffiti' i és l'únic disc de Led Zeppelin que no inclou ni guitarres acústiques ni teclats. Va aconseguir amb rapidesa el nº1 a les llistes americanes i angleses, no obstant les seves vendes van ser significativament menors que els seus treballs anteriors. Les crítiques van ser diverses, sostenint alguns que era el pitjor treball de la banda. Tot i això, contenia el per a molts segon millor tema de Led Zeppelin després de 'Stairway to heaven', 'Achilles last stand', la cançó preferida de Jimmy Page de tot el catàleg del grup i amb els seus més de deu minuts, un dels temes de més durada dels Zeppelin que no solia faltar als seus xous en directe.
