El 19 de gener de 1980 es va publicar al Regne Unit àlbum debut homònim de la banda anglo-americana liderada per Chrissie Hynde. Amb la seva barreja de rock, punk i pop i temes com 'Stop your sobbing', 'Kid' i 'Brass in pocket' va aconseguir la mateixa setmana de la seva publicació el lloc nº1 de les llistes romanent-hi quatre setmanes. Al Billboard 200 americà va ser top10.
El disc conté tant temes de punk rock com de pop rock. La influència de la banda s'estén des del punk rock dels anys 70 fins a l'indie rock dels anys 2000. L'àlbum va ser aclamat per la crítica per la seva energia i les seves melodies enganxoses, i es considera un dels àlbums més influents de la dècada dels 80.
