Machine Head és el sisè àlbum d'estudi de la banda britànica de hard rock Deep Purple, gravat el desembre de 1971 a Montreux, Suïssa, i publicat el 25 de març de 1972 a través de Purple Records.
Com que amb anterioritat el grup havia gravat els seus treballs en el lleure entre els seus concerts, en aquesta ocasió va voler disposar de més temps per gravar fora de l'entorn típic d'estudi, amb l'esperança d'obtenir un so més proper al de les seves actuacions a directe. Per aquest motiu va llogar l'estudi mòbil de The Rolling Stones i va reservar el casino de Montreux, però durant un espectacle de Frank Zappa l'edifici va cremar fins als fonaments. El conjunt va haver de recórrer al Grand Hôtel, tancat durant l'hivern, i el va convertir en un local apte per a enregistraments. Aquests fets, especialment l'incendi del casino, van servir d'inspiració per a la cançó Smoke on the Water.
Machine Head és un dels àlbums més comercialment reeixits de la banda i va arribar a la primera posició en països com el Regne Unit, França o Alemanya. Amb el pas del temps segueix rebent ressenyes favorables i diverses publicacions ho han situat com un dels millors del seu gènere.
